It is well within your power to score high on the GRE test by preparing ahead of time. While preparation is key in order to be successful at this type of test, there are more than enough resources for you to be able to plan well ahead without having to cram. In fact, cramming at the last minute really won’t be very helpful with this type of test because the required knowledge has to be ingrained and that just can’t happen overnight.

One of the best things you can do to ensure a high score is to take a practice exam at the beginning of your preparation. Make sure the practice exam is recent and not from a book or website that is several years old. Once you take and score your practice test, pay particular attention to those areas where you scored the lowest. Develop a plan at the outset to study the parts you had trouble with.

If you have difficulty with the verbal part of the GRE test, you will likely find that by increasing your vocabulary knowledge you will be able to increase your GRE scores as well. Vocabulary is a large part of the GRE and you can master that section by mastering your vocabulary. If you are not already a voracious reader, start now to become one. Read a wide variety of material to increase your vocabulary and your knowledge. Pay close attention to how well you are retaining what you read. Study with a friend, if possible, and have that friend ask you questions over the material you have read.

Practice analyzing what you are reading, much like the way it is done on the GRE test. Follow the model on the practice test so you can practice that portion. Also, study graded GRE essays and go over them with a keen eye so you can tell which kind of essays earn the high scores and which ones don’t. Practice writing essays on a variety of topics so you will be well prepared when it comes time to write your own essay for the GRE.

Practice doing the math problems on the GRE practice test and note what kind of problems give you the most trouble. Then practice these problems over and over until they seem easy to you. Remember, time is your enemy on test day so even though you may be able to work the math problems, make sure you can work them quickly enough to be able to finish the entire test.

Start now to prepare yourself for the GRE test and develop a study plan that is based on your individual needs. Be sure to include a well rounded study of vocabulary as part of your GRE preparation as much of the GRE is dependent upon your ability to master vocabulary. By building your vocabulary now you can ensure that you will ace that part of the GRE and your newfound knowledge will also serve you well in the future.
