SAT vocabulary review is a big part of preparing for the test and ignoring this option could have drastic consequences. You may be good in spelling and English already, and if you are, you already have an edge; however, incorporating the study of words into your preparation makes good sense for several reasons.
As you probably know, the SAT test is timed and time is of the essence. Time is so critical when taking this test that many who have already taken it advise to practice enough so that you can recognize the directions so you don’t have to take time to read them. While I wouldn’t advocate not reading directions for any test, I mention that as an example of how crucial the test taking time limit is. Learning and reviewing as many new words as you can will help you to complete the test on time.
Over 2 million students take the SAT test each year and many of them don’t finish it. That’s because they run out of time. Now, this doesn’t mean that the students who run out of time aren’t prepared; that simply means that time was up before many of the students finished answering the questions. That could happen to you, too, and if it does, you want to make sure that the questions you were able to answer are correct because if you lose points for questions not answered and then you lose more points for wrong answers, you may not score very high. Not doing an SAT vocabulary review could mean there are more questions you cannot answer, which could lower your score substantially.
Your reading comprehension score could also suffer if you don’t make the effort to review word lists and expand your vocabulary. Students who leave word study out of their SAT prep often find it difficult to understand all of the words in the passages and that makes it difficult to answer the questions correctly. Don’t forget, you’ll also have to make word choices when it comes time to fill in the blank and without having undergone serious study, you may not know the meanings of the words.
Because of the critical time limit, you won’t have time to sit there and mull over the words to try to figure out what they mean. You will have enough time to read the sentences and make a word choice so if you are familiar with the word choices and their meanings, you will have no trouble with this part; otherwise, you run the risk of scoring low on that part of the test. Give yourself an edge by making the effort for plenty of SAT vocabulary review.
