Improve Communication and Improve Your Life

Broad Vocabulary

One word. That’s all it takes to change the meaning of your entire sentence or thought. Read the following example to see how powerful communication is and how you can change your entire life when you work to improve communication. I once knew a woman whose husband provoked an argument by using the word “but” when he meant to use the word “and.” It seems the couple had committed to a date night once a week and after the first of such nights, the husband was asked how it went. The exact sentence as relayed to the husband’s friend, who later relayed it to the wife, is as follows. “She was very talkative throughout the evening, but we had a good time.” Well, when the woman heard this she was livid! She thought her husband was saying that she talked too much but they had managed to have a good time anyway.

After a good deal of fuming and pouting, the couple finally had it out. It turns out the husband had meant to say the word and instead of the word but and truly hadn’t realized how much one small word could change the meaning of his sentence. He finally explained to his wife, who had gotten her feelings hurt, that all he had meant to say was that it was great that they finally had time to talk without the kids around. “I meant to say,” he pleaded, “that she was very talkative and we had a good time.”

Finally forgiven, the husband made a commitment to improve communication between he and his wife. As you might guess, this wasn’t the first time they had had words because of well, words! Time and again, this couple had misunderstood one another, largely due to a wrong word choice. The story makes even more sense when you realize the woman was a professional writer who was used to making every word count while her husband had failed high school English twice before finally graduating. Vocabulary buidling had never been a priority for the husband.

You may have similar experiences of misunderstandings and hurt feelings when miscommunication occurs. However, the ability to relay information in a concise, effective manner will have a large bearing on how successful you are in your personal and professional life. Relationships – all relationships are impacted either negatively or positively by the quality of communication. Ultimate Vocabulary can assist you in improving this aspect of your life.

Of course, most communication issues are far more complex than simply saying but when you mean and. Still, it is an important lesson for those of us who lack stellar communication skills. One of the best ways to improve communication is by building up your vocabulary. Learning how and when to use the right word can make all the difference in the world – literally!

Expanding Your Vocabulary is Fun!

Expanding your vocabulary is fun and there are a lot of creative ways to do it if you look around. Of course, reading is one of the best ways to learn new words because often, you can get the meaning of the new word just by reading the words around it. We use context clues to understand what others are saying when they use words we don’t know and often, this works. However, sometimes, we’re left in the dark because we just don’t understand the meaning of the words people use. Vocabulary building is an exercise that will help you avoid these situations entirely.

You can also learn new words by playing word games like crossword puzzles and many of the word games found online. I know one woman who has earned a lot of prizes by playing word games online. The site gives away tickets for each game played and you save up your tickets until you have enough to redeem them for something you want. She has gotten several tech gadgets and a few kitchen gadgets as well. She says she plays the games to relax and since she likes word games anyway, she figures she might as well earn something while she is playing so instead of going to many of the arcade game sites, she sticks to the one that rewards her for playing word games!

Expanding your vocabulary is something you should do over the course of your lifetime as new words are always evolving. Staying on top of new words will help you in all aspects of your life, such as your work life, your social life, and your personal life. A well rounded vocabulary is a sign of intelligence and most people are easy to judge us by how we talk.

Reader’s Digest said it years ago when they said, “It pays to increase your word power.” Their word power column has been a popular feature of the magazine for decades and they have usually been able to stump me, at least on a few of the words. The truth is, though, that people with a larger vocabulary earn more money than those with a limited command of the English language. Possessing superior communication skills is a staple of many jobs in the market today and those who don’t are often passed over for promotions in favor of the articulate. Ultimate Vocabulary is an eReflect produced a software that is a fun and effective way to achieve an extensive vocabulary.

Expanding your vocabulary doesn’t have to be a drag. You don’t have to memorize boring word lists or read the dictionary. Start with reading; read something you enjoy and look for words that are unfamiliar to you. Look them up in the dictionary and then go back and read the passage that contained them again. See how much more sense it makes now? Having done this, you’ve made the word yours now. You’ll recognize it the next time you see it and, just as important, you’ll begin to use the word yourself without even thinking about it.

Invest in a Daily Vocabulary Builder

Communication major dimensions scheme

Word of the Day calendars are cute and they can make for some great on the spot conversation but they don’t really do much to build your vocabulary. Instead, for lasting results, invest in a daily vocabulary builder. By expanding your word repertoire, you’ll open yourself up to more exciting choices in your personal as well as in your professional life.

Investing in a software program designed to increase your word usage is a good idea on many fronts. For one thing, this type of program is one of the most cost effective educational measures you can take. Software such as Ultimate Vocabulary, a highly esteemed word building program, can help you to prepare for tests, help you to prepare for the job market, and expand your social life.

Intelligent people are drawn to intelligent people and having a well rounded command of the English language will open doors previously closed to you. Employers will judge you, professors will grade you, and those you come into contact with on a daily basis will immediately sense that you are or are not intelligent based on how you converse. Using a daily vocabulary builder such as Ultimate Vocabulary only takes minutes a day, yet it will bring amazing results within a relatively short period of time.

You’ll learn thousands of new words and be able to use them with confidence because you’ll be exposed to multiple usage examples so there will be no confusion. In addition, this incredible software program is actually fun to use! It also includes audio pronunciations of thousands of words, which is invaluable all by itself. Remember, our former president, George W. Bush, a Yale graduate, mispronounced so many words that on Jay Leno’s last night as host of The Tonight Show, he actually thanked former President Bush for supplying him with so many jokes! Now, while it’s fun to laugh at political figures when they butcher the English language, you don’t want people snickering at you, especially at work, because you mispronounce words. Furthermore, unless you’re famous, you most likely won’t end up on The Tonight Show.

A professionally designed daily vocabulary builder will turn you into a super communicator that others look up to. When you talk, people will listen and they will automatically assume you know what you are talking about because of the words you use. You’ll not only expand your vocabulary but you’ll also expand your horizons as you develop the confidence to take on more responsibility. Invest in yourself and get started today enhancing your communication skills. Vocabulary building is a sure path to success.

Building Vocabulary Skills With Software

Countries of the world where English is an off...
Image via Wikipedia

If you are concerned about building vocabulary skills, there are various ways you can do this. However, in order to ensure you are getting exposed to the words that will appear on tests, in social circles, and at work, you may want to make the decision to invest in yourself by using educational software to build your vocabulary.

Educational software, such as Ultimate Vocabulary includes thousands of words that you will see in books, on tests, and that are being used every day. While other methods, such as working crosswords, are fun and conducive to expanding your word knowledge, they are not necessarily comprised of the words you will find being used in everyday life. As an avid crossword puzzle fan myself, I have learned many new words over the years by working crosswords; however, I rarely get the chance to use them at work or on social occasions. There’s just not too many chances to work the words ort, erne, or ibis into a conversation.

Ultimate Vocabulary acts as your own personal tutor. You will do exercises, take tests, and track your progress. Most important, you will recognize words that are being used everywhere you go, although you may not have noticed them before. Adding the words contained in this educational software program to your personal word arsenal will arm you with the knowledge you will need to succeed at building vocabulary skills and that success will be evident at work and in other aspects of your life as well.

Even college graduates benefit from using this software because, unfortunately, most college English courses just don’t focus much on vocabulary. Even the grammar sections of most college courses are glossed over simply because there is so much information to learn, it is difficult to master the parts of speech and rules of syntax the first time around. However, educational software that is strictly dedicated to word knowledge can help you to increase your knowledge base in a relatively short amount of time.

Building vocabulary skills isn’t about impressing your friends or being able to recite big or unknown words. It is really about educating yourself so that you can master other elements on the job or in your personal life. People who have an extensive vocabulary tend to earn more money and they tend to be far more informed about a wide variety of subjects. Word mastery will help you make better decisions in many aspects of your life as you will gain a better understanding of legal matters, banking matters, buying or renting a home, and countless other aspects of your life.

Investing in educational software such as Ultimate Vocabulary is an investment in yourself that will continue to pay dividends for the rest of your life. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll own the words you may have heard before but didn’t quite understand. You’ll learn thousands of new words that you will find yourself adding to your vocabulary without even thinking about it.

Power Words That Make Resumes Stand Out

The Perfect Email Application

It’s easier than ever to create or update your resume today with the wide variety of resume tools that are available online, many of which are free. While there are plenty of resume services that will charge you $100 or more to create a professional resume, you can save a lot of money by doing it yourself. As easy as it is though, to use resume templates to develop a winning resume, the real value of your resume has nothing at all to do with the template you use but rather how the power words you use reflect your skills and experience. Ultimate Vocabulary is a revolutionary software from eReflect that helps you achieve a professional resume because it can help you discover Power Words that stand out in a resume.

For example, do you merely state that you worked at XYZ Company or do you detail how you managed to close the deal 90% of the time? Descriptive word choices can truly make or break your resume, which eventually translates into whether or not you get the job. Did you save your previous company money by buying cheaper supplies or did you negotiate a more favorable price, which resulted in a savings of 50%? In the latter example, not only did you save money but you just added a separate and valuable skill, negotiation.

Using power words will transform your resume into one that will be read, reread, dog-eared, passed around, and eventually held in the hiring manager’s hand as he or she interviews you. Even small changes can make a big difference. For example, if you’re interviewing for a position as an administrative assistant and in the area of your resume where you’re describing your experience, did you maintain customer files or did you manage them?

While it’s important to be honest on your resume, it’s also important to make it stand out against the hundreds or perhaps thousands of competitors. It’s also important to tailor it to the specific position or job for which you are applying. Do your homework and find out what the company wants and if you possess those qualifications, make sure your resume communicates that. In this instance, the written word is all you have and it must be powerful in order for you to get to first base.

The lesson here, of course, is how important vocabulary is in the workplace. Your potential employer will get a different picture of you and your skill set based on the specific power words you use. We call these power words because they empower you, because the right word is so much more powerful than the wrong word, and because there is power in the written – and spoken – word. Invest your time, vocabulary building is one of the fastest and most effective methods to achieve success in the business arena.

Look over your resume again and again before you turn it in to the person you hope will be writing your next paycheck. Is it powerful? If it isn’t, build your word power today by building your vocabulary, which, in turn, will help you to build your career as the right words will start coming to you naturally. Now, that’s powerful!

Is Your Executive Vocabulary in Line With Your Job Title?

Communication code scheme
Image via Wikipedia

Nothing frustrates subordinates more than feeling they are smarter than their superiors. I know this firsthand because I had a boss that couldn’t spell and instead of asking one of us “peons” to correct his spelling, his memos went out to the masses uncorrected. While we whispered behind his back and wondered aloud how he managed to obtain his position, the morale in the office was low. Had he asked for our help, we would have been happy to oblige, but instead of honing his executive vocabulary to match his elite position, he walked around like a know-it-all, crushing any respect we might have had for him in the beginning.

Often, executives have so much on their plates they simply don’t have time to pay attention to things like spelling, vocabulary building and grammar, and why should they when they have secretaries and assistants to polish their correspondence? However, most people communicate at about the same level in both oral and written communication so if your corporate terminology is lacking in the written word, chances are it is lacking when you speak to others as well.

Most underlings don’t correct executives and for good reason. However, your executive vocabulary doesn’t stop at the office door. It goes to the golf course, it travels through your cell phone and it doesn’t take a break even for the most important of business meetings. Are you making the impression you want to? If not, you can do yourself a huge favor by building your vocabulary, which you can do in private and in only minutes per day.

The evolution of educational software, such as the kind that you can use on your home or office computer has transformed countless lives because people who don’t have the time or money for formal education can learn at home at their own pace. For example, Ultimate Vocabulary, which is a type of educational software that will boldly enhance your communication skills, has taken the business world by storm. Employees who have never held a corporate position before have reported enormous success by using this software at home, in their spare time, to enhance their vocabulary and build their business skills. In addition, corporate executives, who might be too embarrassed or too busy to attend formal classes have transformed their whole way of communicating with others by using this program.

Even if you already have the job or position you want, you can greatly improve your effectiveness by improving your executive vocabulary. Whether you’re on the golf course or in the boardroom, the way in which you communicate can indeed make or break important business deals. Consider the impact your enhanced verbal and written skills can have on your professional and personal life and invest in your future today.

The Rewards of Effective Communication in Business

day in the life: lunch money

You may know what you want to say or write but unless you are able to get your message across to others in the workplace by using effective communication, your message will be lost. Most of us don’t realize how much we communicate on a daily basis and when we’re at work we often communicate in a variety of ways, for example, face to face, over the phone, through the written word, and of course, through body language.

Being able to verbalize information to colleagues, superiors, and clients in a succinct manner is a skill that will carry you well through your career. In addition, the ability to effectively compose well written correspondence is a skill that is in great demand in the majority of workplaces. Knowing when and how to use the right terminology in any given situation is necessary in order to be taken seriously in the business environment, while the lack of this knowledge could seriously impede your career. Vocabulary building is easy with eReflects revolutionary Ultimate Vocabulary software.

Many years ago, seniority ruled but that is not the case in most occupations today. Today, it is the go-getter that moves up the corporate ladder, regardless of how long that person has been employed with the company. Often, those who practice effective communication are the ones that are promoted first, even above those with more experience and education. That fact serves to show just how important a professional grasp of the English language is.

The importance of powerful communication skills in the workplace cannot be stressed enough. People want information, they want answers, they want explanations and in order to satisfy them, whether they are customers, clients, or corporate bigwigs, you must be able to convey your message in a way that makes sense and is understood by the other party. Doing so will earn you respect on the job but it will also earn you promotions and raises because the powers that be will take you far more seriously than they would otherwise.

This is what can happen when you build your vocabulary to a professional business level. By ensuring that you sound as professional as you look, you can reserve your spot in the highest of the corporate ladder rungs. When the economy is in a downturn or the company is facing hard times, sometimes, only the most valuable employees survive. Make sure you are one of them by making the effort to polish your communication skills so that you will be viewed among the company’s greatest assets.

Using Business Words in Workplace Email

Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client
Image via Wikipedia

Most people don’t bother to spell check or scrutinize the personal emails they send to friends and family but it will serve you well if you get in the habit of doing so in the workplace. While your friends and family won’t hold it against you for using slang and abbreviations in email and chat programs, when you send an email at work, whether it is to an outside source or to someone within the company, you should take care to use professional business words at all times. If your email program doesn’t have an integrated spell checker, copy and paste the message into your word processing program to double check for spelling and grammar before you send it. Otherwise, you could face embarrassment or worse.

Compose your email as if you were speaking verbally to your supervisor or client. Brand yourself as a professional by ensuring that all your workplace communication, written and verbal, is as professional as possible. It is amazing that many of the same people who take care to dress professionally often neglect their workplace communication skills, which could be detrimental to your career. Vocabulary building is a time well spent if you plan to succeed in the business arena.

Taking care not to use slang in your vocational emails is one thing, but what if you fall short when it comes to the way you use business words in your written communications? Perhaps you’ve never composed work related messages or letters before. How does one learn such a skill, especially when you already have a job and leave work each day to arrive at home where other demands await?

Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about formatting email messages. The program pretty much takes care of that for you. Where you can make a positive impression, though, is in the terminology you use, which may be difficult at first if you are used to dashing off abbreviated, lingo-filled messages to your friends. However, you can easily get noticed by the powers that be by packing your memos and messages with an excellent command of the English language, which can be yours when you choose to build your vocabulary.

You can easily and conveniently expand your vocabulary horizons without having to memorize boring business words. In fact, Ultimate Vocabulary, an educational software program that you use from the comfort of your own home, is designed to expand your word usage and help you to advance in your career. Investing in yourself in such a positive way will, no doubt, have long term consequences and mark you as a skilled communicator, something every workplace is in desire of.

What to Look for in an Business Vocabulary Builder

Graduates_in_tertiary_education-thousands, eur...
Image via Wikipedia

A popular option for the business minded who want to increase their vocabulary skills is to purchase a business vocabulary builder so that they can work at their own pace in the comfort of their homes without having to take classes at night. While this is a viable option, it is important to choose such a program wisely to ensure that you are getting the most effective instruction for the money. Be aware – there are a lot of educational software choices on the market today and not all of them are created equally. Before you “click here” or “buy now” make sure you are getting a quality program that will indeed enhance your language skills.

Learning new words can not only be fun, but can have a sustainable effect on your career so it is important to choose the right educational software that will give you the edge in your workplace communication. You want to select quality software such as Ultimate Vocabulary that will not only introduce you to new words, but that will give you usage examples as well as definitions. For example, I can tell you that the word nostrum means “a questionable remedy or scheme” but if I don’t use the word in a sentence or two, you may not feel confident using it yourself. Now, if I add to the definition by providing the following sentence, the meaning becomes much more clear, such as “Did you hear the nostrum that salesman was peddling?”

It is imperative that you work with a business vocabulary builder that includes audio pronunciations. Even when you know what certain words mean, you can unnecessarily embarrass yourself by mispronouncing them. In addition, avoid the type of software that uses obvious and annoying computerized voices to pronounce the words you’ll be learning. For best results, you’ll need to hear pronunciations from a human voice so that you can easily replicate them.

Look for training materials that test you. You need to be able to track your vocabulary building progress and advance through the skill levels having mastered previous levels. For this, you’ll need a well organized, professional language tutor specifically designed to broaden your word skills. Look for convenience as well. Does the program allow you to print word lists so that you can study on the go? Is the interface user friendly or do you have to be a tech wizard to even use the program?

Investing in yourself through the use of a business vocabulary builder is a wise career move that will serve to accelerate your climb in the business world. Make sure your investment pays off by taking the time at the outset to verify that the program you are interested in delivers all of the above.

Develop Your Business Terminology Before the Interview

Origins of the English lexicon, based on a com...
Image via Wikipedia

If you already have a good command of the English language and a rather extensive vocabulary, this will not be difficult for you. However, if you wouldn’t exactly consider yourself articulate, you may want to brush up on your vocabulary in general and your business word usage in particular. The truth is that from the moment you open your mouth, you will be judged by how effective your speech is. Regardless of your experience or education level, you can gain the advantage over your competition by impressing the interviewer with your communication skills.

That doesn’t mean that you see how many big words you can throw out. On the contrary; an effective grasp of business terminology means that you know which words to use when and, just as important, that you understand the meaning of the words that are being spoken to you, this can only be accomplished through vocabulary building. This is true whether you are interviewing for a position as a receptionist or for a position higher up on the corporate ladder. Regardless of how polished your resume is, without effective communication skills, your chances of landing the job are minimal.

Unfortunately, you just can’t fake a professional vocabulary. Fortunately, though, you can build your vocabulary and no one has to be the wiser. There are a wide variety of activities you can engage in online that will boost your professional language skills through the roof, which will give you a far better chance of acing the interview and landing the job. Not only that but as your vernacular expands, so will your choices of positions in the business world.

Consider the expense of broadening your business terminology as an investment in your future. Sadly, even degreed professionals who graduate with honors can’t depend on their degrees to provide them with the level of oral and written communication skills necessary in today’s workplace. It is for this reason and others that educational software such as Ultimate Vocabulary has become so popular among those who wish to advance their careers by fine-tuning their vocabularies.

Expand your word usage and get your foot in the door by honing your vocabulary. Work at your own pace and from the comfort of your home and with a little time and effort, you’ll be branded as an accomplished professional in your industry.
